Our Mission and Vision

Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School, a Catholic college preparatory school and work study program sponsored by the Salesians of Don Bosco, forms underserved young men and women who will actively live faith, hope, and love. Through the educational approach of St. John Bosco and under the protection of Mary Help of Christians, we create an environment of trust and loving kindness.

Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School provides the environment and opportunities to integrate active faith with high standards for life.

  • Fosters growth in faith and reason
  • Encourages hard work, commitment and discipline at studies, work and life
  • Works with home, community and corporate partners in creating future leaders
  • Motivates young people to know and love God and to embrace the gift of life and service
  • Builds the Kingdom of God now and for eternity

About the Cristo Rey Network

The Cristo Rey Network® is the only network of high schools in the country that integrate four years of rigorous college preparatory academics with four years of professional work experience through the Corporate Work Study Program. Comprised of 39 Catholic, career focused, college preparatory schools, the Cristo Rey Network delivers a powerful and innovative approach to education that equips students from families of limited economic means with the knowledge, character, and skills to achieve their aspirations.

While Cristo Rey® schools are locally owned and operated, the Cristo Rey Network national office protects the integrity of the movement and advances school excellence and innovation by

  • Surfacing, scaling, and standardizing effective practices across all schools through professional development offerings, convenings, and consultation in academics, college enrollment and completion, Corporate Work Study Program, performance measurement, and governance;
  • Facilitating new school growth through development and implementation of a national growth plan and support for new schools;
  • Supporting mission accountability – as defined by the Mission Effectiveness Standards –through school evaluations and data analysis; and
  • Stewarding national branding, visibility, and fundraising.

Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School was founded by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the second largest Catholic religious order in the world. Today, this Catholic religious organization continues to do the work of the Lord in the spirit of its founder – St. John Bosco. When St. John Bosco founded the Salesians in 1859, his mission was clear and simple: to be a friend – a friend to kids who were poor, kids abandoned, kids at risk – and in so doing, to be a friend to Christ. He dedicated his life to them, and today, Salesians can be found worldwide in many different initiatives on behalf of young people: schools, oratories, youth centers, technical and professional training centers, parishes, foreign missions, and activities in the realm of mass media and social communications.

All those within Don Bosco’s spiritual family share his educational method, popularly called “The Preventive System,” which focuses on developing the whole person – body, heart, mind and spirit. It seeks to prevent the need for punishment by placing the child in an environment in which he or she is encouraged to be the best they can be. It is a congenial, friendly and holistic approach to education. The basic principle of this system is a deep understanding and love for young people and their problems. The Salesian charism continues Don Bosco’s vision and responds to a great need felt by young people to “know that they are loved.” Significantly, Don Bosco’s example and educational methods have inspired a Gospel lifestyle which leads to holiness in life, as witnessed in the lives of those who have embraced Don Bosco’s experience and made it their own.
