From Our President

On behalf of our students, faculty, and staff, it is with tremendous pride that I welcome you to the Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School website.

We are a unique school of diverse students who work hard to be successful, despite limited financial means, combining a rigorous college preparatory curriculum with professional work experience. We have an educational model that empowers our students with the necessary skills to grow into mature and confident people who are ready for success in college…and in life!

We are grateful to receive tremendous support from so many of our friends in the Tampa Bay community:

  • Large companies who believe in and hire our students through our innovative Corporate Work Study Program.
  • Volunteers who help our students meet the challenges of being in a rigorous and unique high school college preparatory environment.
  • Generous donors who help us every day, to raise the necessary capital on behalf of our students, who are receiving a quality education in conjunction with the invaluable corporate work experience necessary to be successful.

What you will see, as you explore our website, are glimpses of the environment that Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School offers daily to our students and families with whom we educate and work. You will see we are all proud of the fact that we prepare our students for their college experience, and to make a positive difference in our world!

Guided by the mission of the Salesians of Don Bosco, whose life’s work is to educate underprivileged youth, Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School is driven to provide the best possible environment for the students we are privileged to educate.

About the Cristo Rey Network

The Cristo Rey Network® is the largest network of high schools in the United States whose enrollment is limited to low-income youth. Cristo Rey Network delivers a distinctive approach to inner-city education that equips students with the knowledge, character, and skills to transform their lives. From freshman year, Cristo Rey schools establish a culture of high-expectations by blending rigorous academics, four years of professional work experience, Catholic moral values, and support for students to and through college.

Thirty-seven Cristo Rey schools located in 24 states provide a quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to almost 12,000 young people who live in urban communities with limited educational options.

Salesian
Schools

Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School was founded by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the second largest Catholic religious order in the world. Today, this Catholic religious organization continues to do the work of the Lord in the spirit of its founder – St. John Bosco. When St. John Bosco founded the Salesians in 1859, his mission was clear and simple: to be a friend – a friend to kids who were poor, kids abandoned, kids at risk – and in so doing, to be a friend to Christ. He dedicated his life to them, and today, Salesians can be found worldwide in many different initiatives on behalf of young people: schools, oratories, youth centers, technical and professional training centers, parishes, foreign missions, and activities in the realm of mass media and social communications.

All those within Don Bosco’s spiritual family share his educational method, popularly called “The Preventive System,” which focuses on developing the whole person – body, heart, mind and spirit. It seeks to prevent the need for punishment by placing the child in an environment in which he or she is encouraged to be the best they can be. It is a congenial, friendly and holistic approach to education. The basic principle of this system is a deep understanding and love for young people and their problems. The Salesian charism continues Don Bosco’s vision and responds to a great need felt by young people to “know that they are loved.” Significantly, Don Bosco’s example and educational methods have inspired a Gospel lifestyle which leads to holiness in life, as witnessed in the lives of those who have embraced Don Bosco’s experience and made it their own.
