Last week Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School welcomed Governor Ron DeSantis and lawmakers, donning face masks and practicing social distancing, to announce a bill signing that impacts students across Florida.

DeSantis signed HB 7067 that expands the school voucher program allowing students to attend private schools. Cristo Rey Tampa President Scott Morreale thanked the Governor and lawmakers for their commitment to offering low-income families school options.

President Morreale shared, “Cristo Rey is fortunate to serve our students under Florida’s scholarship programs. No one type of school is better than another. But one school may be a better fit for an individual student.”

Aydin Montero, a member of Cristo Rey Tampa’s first graduating class – the Class of 2020, expressed his gratitude for receiving a scholarship through Step Up For Students.  “As a recipient of the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship, I attended Cristo Rey Tampa Salesian High School. While at Cristo Rey, I learned from the best teachers, made amazing friends, and was introduced to the corporate world, which is not typical for a high school student. Because of your support and efforts, I am the first person in my family to go on to college,” said Aydin. This new graduate of Cristo Rey Tampa is attending the Florida Institute of Technology in the fall and plans to study software engineering.

Cristo Rey Tampa is thankful for the support and partnership with Step Up For Students in managing the Florida Tax Credit Scholarship program. Step Up For Students  administers the scholarship process for Florida Tax Credit Scholarships and Family Empowerment Scholarships and works closely with Cristo Rey Tampa staff (and other schools) to ensure families have access to the educational settings that fits the needs of their child.
